Editing Footage

We have added over our logo for Fuse on top of the cloud time lapse footage at the beginning of our film, this is similar to what the Neighbourhood did with their video so we used their video as inspiration to give ours an indie/alternative look

Production schedule 2

This is our updated production schedule that we will begin working on again tomorrow

Logo design

This is our new band logo that will link to all our blogs. We thought writing Fuse backwards gives it an indie/alternative vibe.

Division of Labour

  • Filming: We have decided to split filming across all three of us equally, as each of us may be in the music video at different times
  • Editing: We have decided to all take a role in editing, however Amy will be in charge of colour manipulation, black & white effect which should be matching throughout our video.
  • Director: We all again take part with this, although I will be in charge of the shot list and storyboards and saying what shots we do next. I will make sure we have filmed everything we need.
  • Props & Costumes: Amy will be supervising and will make sure to bring all the props to our filming locations as she has them already at her house. The filming of fire and smoke bombs will take place at her house. However all actors will be in charge of their own phones and costumes.
  • Makeup: Me and Phoebe will bring in the makeup we need at each location.
  • Sound design: Phoebe will be in charge of bringing the music to the filming sessions. and making sure the actors lip sync in time with the music. She will make sure that the lyrics and lips are matching in the editing stage.

Self marking research and planning

As I have not yet completed all research that needs to be done, I have given myself most marks from Level 2 and a couple marks from Level 3 also. We have only just begun to write our shotlists, storyboards etc. We still need to make final dates on when we will be filming and when we need our actors, and then start brainstorming as we have good ideas on what shots we want and where we want to film. I believe I have put more then basic research and care into my posts and my level of presentation is at a good standard that i'm so far proud of. I think I still need to finish some incomplete posts and use a wider vary of technology as I always draw to Prezi first as it's the easiest site to use.

Past Student Work - Alex and Eddie

Past Student Work - Lew Parker

Viva Brother:

Lew's video is very clean cut and fitting with his choice of music genre. His use of editing and cuts match well with the rhythm and beat, such as it's slow during lines that are sung slowly and sped up when it gets faster.
The mix of concept and performance style in this simple yet effective video fit well also as the song sounds alternate/indie rock and this is usually the sort of video style you'd expect from this song. I noticed they are all wearing denim too creating a visual style for their band.

I like how it isn't too complicated with too many special effects as that wouldn't have fit with the song and you'd be able to tell they only added it for marks. I also like how they make good use of their locations and surroundings that they were accessible and walk around town, occasionally singing, sometimes giving rude gestures but it works.

Strengths:
Their use of experimenting with editing is what made this video stand out, otherwise it would've been too plain and uninteresting to watch. When they edited clips to speed up and slow down it matched with the music and tone and even the lyrics, for example he says "i'll take it one day at a time" and they are slow paced walking through streets. I also enjoyed their innovative use of reverse at the end that again, contrasted well with the beat.

Weaknesses:
Although I enjoyed the effects they added, their could possibly be too many and makes it look a little chaotic in some places.
I realised that the lead singer tends to look away from the camera to the side a lot and occasionally shots were out of focus but they may have been intended.

Things to avoid:
I do want ours to have great effects that captivate our audience but I am worried we could go overboard. I also want our singer (which will only be one or two lines) to really lip sync well and not look awkward nor uncomfortable, and know the lyrics.

Things we can try to achieve:
As our song is also the same genre as Lew's we can try to make ours look as retro as possible yet still with a twist of modern details. I really liked the adding of the MTV logo in the corner which I think we should include in ours also as it's a popular channel where everyone watches new music videos apart from YouTube.

Creating the time lapse

To create the time lapse we have placed it into final cut pro and sped the clip up to 8000%. Due to there being little wind on the day it was filmed, it needed to be sped up a lot. As we are using black and white throughout our video, we have added this on. We lowered the exposure to make clouds stand out more and darker.

Production Schedule

This is our inital production schedule, it only includes shots that we will film without the actors. We will organise further filming dates for the October half-term once our actors are confirmed.

Analysing music videos - Worth It

Powered by emaze

Analysing music videos - Where Are Ü Now

Analysing music videos - Beauty and a Beat

Justin Bieber - Beauty and a Beat

Camera: The camera angles used are mostly close ups, pov and wide shots to capture all the dancing around Justin and the lively atmosphere. We mostly look through Justins eyes as he sings and dances in different places of the park, giving you the feeling you're right there with him and it makes it more personal. Also, a few low angles and bird eyes views are used to capture scenes like when the swimmers dance around Justin and when Justin films himself and Nicki.

Editing: it seems simple but is actually quite clever in some shots such as when the dancer of the red silk swishes the material over the camera, it quickly cuts to another scene by a pool. Another example is after the first chorus with the backup dancers and Justin kicks the water at the camera it suddenly disappears under the water into a different pool. The effective use of cutting makes this video unique and fun.

Mise en Scene: The location is at a water park in LA and is set around the many pools and slides that the dancers are in. There is no special lighting, costume or makeup required as it's all the peoples own clothing. Except for Nicki who is known for her wild choices in outfits as we see her wearing a bright pink dress with fluffy pom poms and a tutu, with a blonde and pink wig. The only props really used are the cameras Justin uses to film the entire thing.

Sound: There isn't really any cutting to the beat, but every time the song changes rhythm from verse, to bridge, to chorus etc it cuts to a different setting within the park. The song is about having fun, partying, being carefree and showing off his girl. There aren't any deep, meaningful lyrics with hidden messages as it's just a fun, dance pop song for the radio, except Nicki's rap does imply a few things. "buns out, weiner" could be a sexual innuendo, and she talks about herself and her tour rather then partying - "world tour it's mine, ten little letters on a big sign".

Representations: no representations are really challenged in this video as it's stereotypical of a male to be the lead and have female dancers following him around, and then show off the lead woman beside them. Also the age stereotype is met as they're all teenagers/young adults having fun, being care free which 18 year olds should be like. Although the place stereotype is slightly challenged as you wouldn't usually expect a music video to be filmed in a water park.

Andrew  Goodwin Theory: the video does demonstrate certain pop genre characteristics as it's common to see the artist themselves singing along, dance routines, a fun vibe with a rap artist featured. There's only a little connection between the lyrics and visuals, as Justin sings "show you off, tonight i wanna show you off", he doesn't have any girl by his side to actually show off. The only relationship is when he says "we gonna party like it's 3012 tonight" and "we young tonight" as the video shows a lot of people dancing through the park, having fun and acting like kids in the water. There are quite a few close ups as Justin is filming himself walking around the park. Justin's usual visual style is to have a leading lady, which in this case is Nicki Minaj, a great dance routine with lots of backing dancers and a stylish outfit which is all featured in this video. There is a lot of 'notion of looking' as we constantly look through his camera, and other cameras around and some of it is like we're looking from Justins eyes (pov shot). There isn't many intertextual references although there is a lot of product placement such as Just Dance 4 is being played, every camera he uses and the water park itself.

Music video styles: the style of this video is dominantly performance, but also a little concept as it's different. Justin sings along to the song and performs it with dancers everywhere around the water park. The fact that Justin filmed it himself and half of it is in pov shot in a location that has nothing to do with the song make its more idea based then other pop videos. The original idea of the video was to make it seem like it was stolen footage from a anon blogger which is why it shows random clips at the start, and then breaks into the real video. This brought a lot of attention to the video as some people really thought he was hacked and it was private footage. The vibe of this video is very enjoyable, energetic and fun with slightly more care free dancing. It'd be fun for our music video to be located in a random place or park and have dancers involved but it could be very difficult.

Record labels and directors: Justin is signed to Island Def Jam Music Group/Island Records and School Boy Records. Nicki Minaj is signed to Lil Wayne's famous YMCMB records/Cash Money Records, Republic Records and Universal.
The director of this video was mostly Justin himself as we see him walk around with a GoPro and also famous movie director, Jon Chu. Chu also directed Justin's film Never Say Never, Believe Tour, Step Up and GI Joe. So to just work with Justin alone is typical thing of Chu to do in his work.
